Hans Aili is Professor Emeritus of Latin at Stockholm University, where he received his PhD in 1979 on a dissertation on Latin prose rhythm, and was made Professor in 1999. He taught undergraduates at all levels on Latin syntax, Latin prose and poetry, and Vulgar Latin, and monitored graduate students, while publishing works on Medieval and Neo Latin. Pietsch is Professor Emeritus in the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, and Curator Emeritus of Fishes in the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he has spent most of his career teaching undergraduates and mentoring graduate students. He has published extensively on the biology of fishes, primarily on the biosystematics, zoogeography, and reproductive biology of marine fishes, and in the history of science, especially 18th-century natural history.
