Even though Gilly the Giraffe has many wonderful things in her life, she sometimes lacks confidence. Why does she have to stand out so much with her long neck, her long black tongue and her mosaic patches? Why do some of the other animals point and laugh at her? Can it be possible to be different and to be cool?

This activity book developed by expert child psychologist Dr Karen Treisman combines a colourfully illustrated therapeutic story about Gilly the Giraffe to help start conversations, which is followed by a wealth of creative activities for children to explore and build upon some of the ideas raised in the story, and beyond!

The activities are accompanied by extensive advice and practical strategies for parents, carers and professionals on how to help children aged 5-10 boost their self-esteem and confidence.

This activity book is complemented by a standalone picture book of Gilly's story, also available from Jessica Kingsley Publishers (Gilly the Giraffe, ISBN 9781839970290).

Reviews for Gilly the Giraffe Self-Esteem Activity Book: A Therapeutic Story with Creative Activities for Children Aged 5-10

Exploring this resource I held in mind the children I primarily come across in my role as a Social Worker in a Family Placement Team. Self-esteem is something which many of these children lack significantly as a result of their early experiences, poor attachment relationships and trauma... There is a broad spectrum of strengths-based activities within the book - some more cognitive and also many creative and sensory focussed resources with which children affected by poor attachment and developmental trauma could more easily engage... The guide explores barriers to positive self-esteem including cultural, familial and generational differences in how we view praise and positive feedback. All in all, this resource is extremely comprehensive and accessible. -- CairnsMoir Connections, Book of the Month, August 2019
