This is a concise and critical treatise on the most important analytical methods in wood chemistry related to pulping and papermaking. The emphasis is on principles and important applications, needed not only in academic research, but especially for industrial applications. It starts with basic information on the chemical composition with analytical techniques of wood and wood components of the main groups (carbohydrates, lignin, and extractives), proceeds to the methods used for the characterization of the chemical properties of wood and pulp fibers (with special emphasis on the fiber surfaces), and concludes with the methods applied to the analysis of pulping and bleach liquors, papermaking waters and effluents, and those used for the analysis of inorganic components in wood and pulps.
