ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- This solid debut (very assured prose) introduces Detective Inspectors, George (Georgina) and Richie.
At 28, the relatively young George gets unwanted attention around her age given her rise to the rank of DI. Her partnership with Richie, in his 50s, is established as being a thoughtful one, with both bringing their strengths to the fore. George is recovering from a near-death incident and this assignment to the (fictional) Outer Hebrides island of Eilean Eadar, to follow-up on an apparent death by suicide, is intended to ease her back into the swing of things.
There's an enjoyable 'buddy' dynamic as their five-day visit unfolds. There's also a menace that builds (the film Midsommar came to mind) with the varying reception that the visiting mainlanders receive among the reclusive community. Fans of Ann Cleeves' Shetland series should enjoy this. Highly recommended. Craig
