"What the Raven Said is a daringly simple, poetically observant, yearlong chronicle of the day to day life of backyard wildlife. The book consists of an email exchange between two women who seek the solace of nature as a balm against the madness that exists ""out there"" beyond the bird feeder outside the window. -Jon Turk, author of The Raven's Gift and Tracking Lions, Myth, and Wilderness in Samburu In this book of letters, Jane Galer and Medea Isphording Bern get at the questions gnawing at so many of us during the pandemic and since: what does it mean to accept our mortality? What does it mean to know we'll never see our favorite places again? What does it mean to live in this specific place in this specific time among this specific flora and fauna-all of which is changing, under threat? This wide-ranging, thoughtful, and humane correspondence shows us two writers grappling with the deep questions of life, all while observing-and very often feeding-a Noah's Ark of ravens, thrushes, hawks and jays while watching out for bobcats, mountain lions, and foxes. -Scott Hutchins, author of A Working Theory of Love A ping-pong account of the battle between their observations and the ethical implications of playing god in the world of wildlife. I most enjoyed the feeling that I was having a privileged view over the shoulders of two good friends as they record the day-to-day trials and tribulations of their own back-garden wilderness. -Tony Soper, former BBC Planet Earth presenter, travel and wildlife guidebook author, including the #1 British best-selling The Bird Table Book"
