ABBEY'S CHOICE AUGUST 2012 - NOW IN PAPERBACK ----- Thirty years after the end of the Vietnam war comes an objective analysis of Australia's involvement. The book shows the extent of Australia's engagement in the Vietnam war and its contribution compared to its allies. The chapters have three dominant themes: a political strand showing what the government of the day was thinking and what it trying to achieve; a domestic strand showing how the nation's people were reacting to the war and their involvement in the conflict; a military strand on the major operations covering the army, the RAN and the RAAF. Their verdict: the war provided a bulwark that led to the creation of the South East Asian economies, and dissipated the communist threat from China that would have allowed China to control the region's natural resources and create future markets.
