Thermodynamics: Fundamentals and Applications offers a blend of theory and practical applications for a complete understanding of thermodynamics for various engineering applications. Beginning with a basic introduction and principles of thermodynamics, the book advances to more specialized topics like organic Rankine cycle, gas mixtures, equilibria and chemical reactions.

Exploring the first law of thermodynamics, different types of energies and their practical applications in engineering devices, the text covers enthalpy, heat transfer and work interactions with a focus on macroscopic and microscopic perspectives. It introduces the second law of thermodynamics and entropy with an in-depth look at Carnot engines and absolute temperature scales. The book includes applied problems that are solved using COOLPROP, Tilmedia and MAPLE-ThermophysicalData packages.

The book is intended for senior undergraduate mechanical, aerospace and chemical engineering students taking courses in thermodynamics.

Instructors will be able to utilize a Solutions Manual, Figure Slides, and MAPLE codes for their courses.

Dr.-Ing. Naseem Uddin, CEng MIMechE, MIEAust CPENG, earned his PhD in aerospace engineering from Universität Stuttgart, Germany in 2008. He is a Senior Assistant Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Programme, Universiti Teknologi Brunei, Brunei (UTB), Brunei Darussalam. Previously, he worked as a full professor at NED University of Engineering and Technology, Pakistan. Dr. Uddin is a registered chartered engineer with Engineers Australia and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, UK. He is also listed in the National Engineering Register (NER) of Australia and recognized as a professional engineer by the board of professional engineers of Queensland, Australia and by the Pakistan Engineering Council. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He teaches fluid mechanics to both graduate and undergraduate students at UTB, and his research interests are in the areas of heat transfer and computational turbulence. Dr. Uddin has authored Fluid Mechanics: A Problem-Solving Approach and Heat Transfer: A Systematic Learning Approach, both published by CRC Press.

Reviews for Thermodynamics: Fundamentals and Applications

“This is a comprehensive textbook. The low-threshold exercises motivate students to apply the concepts presented and thus deepen their understanding. Particularly noteworthy is the inclusion of code examples that encourage re-coding and experimentation. Given the enormous importance of modelling and simulation in modern thermodynamics, the application-oriented inclusion of software tools offers real added value for (future) engineers.” - Andreas Mecklenfeld, TLK-Thermo
