The second volume of a world-renowned scholar's long-awaited Qur'an commentary, now available in English

Angelika Neuwirth's six-volume commentary, published originally in Germany, offers a historical and philological analysis of the form, structure, and semantic message of each of the 114 Qur'anic suras. It brings together the fruits of the past hundred years of scholarship and provides access to the aesthetic, theological, linguistic, and semantic background required to appreciate the novelty, force, and historical position of the Qur'an. Contextualizing the Qur'anic message in the broader world of late antiquity, it bridges the gap between the inner-Islamic scholarly world and the academy.

Skillfully translated by Samuel Wilder, this volume focuses on the early middle Meccan suras.

Reviews for The Qur'an: Text and Commentary, Volume 2.1: Early Middle Meccan Suras: The New Elect

“Neuwirth’s work is the most original in Qur’anic Studies.  Her commentary series on the Meccan Suras, culminating a career of engagement with the Qur’an, is the new reference work in the field.  The English translation so expertly done by Dr. Wilder is one of the most important developments in Islamic studies.  The erudition and insights of one of the leading scholars on the Qur’an are now accessible and I recommend these volumes for not only Islamic Studies specialist, but all scholars working on scriptures.”— Walid A. Saleh, University of Toronto   “Nobody in Qur’anic studies is able to offer a comprehensive and original commentary on the Qur’an like Angelika Neuwirth. Her interpretation serves an innovative analysis that is grounded in a unique knowledge of the dynamics of the Text, in Islamic interpretive history, and in the best tradition of scholarship.”—Roberto Tottoli, Università di Napoli L’Orientale
