Review from previous edition This volume gives a comprehensive survey of the state of knowledge today...The volume demonstrates how far we have now moved...towards a study of Islamic law as a phenomenon that varies dramatically with historical and social contexts, and how the “texts” interact with these realities in myriad different ways. It is highly recommended for those who wish to be informed about the state of knowledge in the field today. * Knut S. Vikør, Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies * An innovative historiographical examination of a wide range of topics in the areas of Islamic Law and Islamic Legal Studies...the Handbook, considering the breadth, depth and perspectives it provides on a wide range of areas of Islamic Law and Islamic Legal Studies, has few if any competitors.
