Reviews for The Flame of the Heart: Prayers of a Chasidic Mystic

Spontaneous outpourings of a soul drunk on God. Reading these prayers opens a doorway into your soul. Praying them opens a gateway to God. This book is an inexhaustible treasure. Use it daily. --Rabbi Rami Shapiro, author of The Divine Feminine in Biblical Wisdom Literature: Annotated & Explained These humble and sincere prayers, in the gentle translations of David Sears, can speak to our hearts even in the twenty-first century. --Tamar Frankiel, PhD, Academy for Jewish Religion, California; author of The Gift of Kabbalah: Discovering the Secrets of Heaven, Renewing Your Life on Earth The Flame of the Heart Rabbi Nachman of Breslov is one of the Jewish world's posthumous superstars. Although he has been dead for over 200 years, his name is scrawled in graffiti all over Israel since he became the focus and namesake of the spiritual revivalist Na-Nah-Nahman sect. So what's all the fuss about? The Flame of the Heart is a translation of the prayers that were written down by Rebbe Nosson of Breslov, who was the closest disciple and personal secretary of the Hasidic mystic. This is unlike any prayerbook you will find in a synagogue as it has readings with titles like 'Unity in Diversity, 'Praying in the Fields, Living with Mindfulness and Finding God in Everything . This book is a challenge to the most seasoned of worshippers and is the religious equivalent of taking a car off-road and down the side of a mountain; you might recognise the language of the writing, but the experience is completely new. The Flame of the Heart: Prayers of a Chasidic Mystic Reb Noson of Breslov (translated and adapted by David Sears with the Breslov Research Institute) (Jewish Lights, Vermont: 2006) Price: 12.99--Marcus J Freed Something Jewish (06/19/2007) Reb Noson of Breslov (1780 1844) was the closest disciple of the celebrated Chasidic master Rebbe Nachman of Breslov (1772 1810). He took it upon himself to explain his teacher's wisdom in order to enable every Jew to experience mystical communion with God. In this enlightening collection of prayers translated and adapted by David Sears of the Breslov Research Institute, we see that Reb Noson was a spiritual teacher who had great respect for prayer as a powerful tool for pouring out one's heart to God. The Chasidic Jews believed that daily prayer services were a path of mystical ascent. Here you will find petitions to God about spiritual ups and downs, unity in diversity, simplicity, love of humanity, awakening the soul, finding God in everything, and much more. Here is an example of a prayer about Beginning Anew: Help us to serve You always, with all our hearts. May our Divine service seem new to us every day; may we begin afresh, as if we had never served You before. May we never succumb to thinking of ourselves as old or incapable of change; rather, may we be 'bold as a leopard and light as an eagle, swift as a deer and strong as a lion, to carry out the will of our Father in Heaven.' Let us experience the truth of the prophet's words, 'Those who yearn for God will find their strength renewed; they will take flight like eagles; they will run and not be faint, walk and not become weary.' --Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat Spirituality & Health (04/13/2006) The Flame of the Heart is a collection of the prayers of Rabbi Noson Steinharz, the foremost disciple of Rebbe Nachman. They are divided into seven sections Spiritual Awakening, Self-Improvemen! Cleaving to God, Meditation, Deeds, Peace and Redemption. As might be expected in any such collection the quality of the prayers varies but the fine ones are very fine indeed. Flame of the Heart makes a nice companion to the collections of Rebbe Nachman's prayers and meditations already published by Jewish Lights.--Rabbi Dr Charles H Middleburgh Liberal Judaism ULPS News (02/01/2006) The Flame of the Heart Rabbi Nachman of Breslov is one of the Jewish world's posthumous superstars. While articulating the central concerns of Jewish life, it reinforces the social and spiritual bonds of the Jewish community. Yet the one precious component that was inevitably compromised when the prayer service became fixed is that of spontaneity. The fifty original prayers included in this splendid collection are the creative sparks of one Reb Noson Sternharz (1780 1844), the closest disciple of the celebrated Rebbe Nachman of Breslov (1772 1810) great-grandson of the Founder of the Hasidic movement, the Baal Shem Tov. Themes include: Turning Darkness into Light, Music to Awaken the Soul, Simplicity, Overcoming Anger, Midnight Meditation, The Universal Shabbat, A Song of Peace, Love of Humanity, and many more. This spiritual treasure that will give renewed energy to everyone who wants to deepen their spiritual life.--Dov Peretz Elkins JEWISH MEDIA REVIEW Spontaneous outpourings of a soul drunk on God.
