The Canadian Environment in Political Context uses a non-technical approach to introduce environmental politics to undergraduate readers. The second edition features expanded chapters on wildlife, water, pollution, land, and energy.

Beginning with a brief synopsis of environmental quality across Canada, the text moves on to examine political institutions and policymaking, the history of environmentalism in Canada, and other crucial issues including Indigenous peoples and the environment, as well as Canada's North. Enhanced with case studies, key words, and a comprehensive glossary, Olive's book addresses the major environmental concerns and challenges that Canada faces in the twenty-first century.

Reviews for The Canadian Environment in Political Context, Second Edition

The Canadian Environment in Political Context provides an excellent compilation and analysis of information surrounding environmental policy, decision making, and resource management in Canada. Given the importance of climate change, biodiversity loss, and other current environmental issues, as well as Canada's role and responsibility in the global context, this updated edition is timely and provides critical information of interest to many Canadians. The book uses both historical and recent examples to illustrate key concepts in a clear, concise manner and is even humorous at times, despite the serious subject matter. It is an excellent resource, particularly for undergraduate and graduate courses on the subject or for conservationists and public servants who need a primer on how the environment and natural resources are managed in Canada by various jurisdictions. Olive's discussion questions help readers to think about the content of each chapter in their own lives and to examine their own worldview. - Sheila Colla, Faculty of Environmental Studies, York University Andrea Olive's The Canadian Environment in Political Context is the 'go-to' book for any courses dealing with environmental politics in Canada. Olive provides the necessary ecological, historical, and structural policy context in the opening chapters required for a more comprehensive understanding of contemporary political developments (which are covered expansively in the latter part of the book). The second edition includes the latest developments in the field, including clear coverage of the political minefield of carbon pricing in the Canadian federation. If there is a book to use in a class covering Canadian environmental politics, this is it. - Ryan Katz-Rosene, President, Environmental Studies Association of Canada Revised and updated, this second Edition of Olive's indispensable The Canadian Environment in Political Context provides readers with the tools they need to make sense of the fast-paced changes in today's Canadian environmental political climate. Especially welcome is new chapter on water, as well as the thoughtful treatment of Indigenous rights and context throughout the book. This book is a go-to primer on environmental politics in Canada. - Alice Cohen, Earth and Environmental Science, Acadia University
