Systemic Islamophobia in Canada presents critical perspectives on systemic Islamophobia in Canadian politics, law, and society, and maps areas for future research and inquiry.
The authors consist of both scholars and professionals who encounter in the ordinary course of their work the - sometimes banal, sometimes surprising - operation of systemic Islamophobia. Centring the lived realities of Muslims primarily in Canada, but internationally as well, the contributors identify the limits of democratic accountability in the operation of our shared institutions of government. Intended as a guide, the volume identifies important points of consideration that have systemic implications for whether, how, and under what conditions Islamophobia is enabled and perpetuated, and in some cases even rendered respectable policy or bureaucratic practice in Canada. Ultimately, Systemic Islamophobia in Canada identifies a range of systemically Islamophobic sites in Canada to guide citizens and policymakers in fulfilling the promise of an inclusive democratic Canada.

"" Systemic Islamophobia in Canada fills a vital intellectual void by providing a myriad of trenchant works that expose the distinct layers of Islamophobia in Canada, a context underexamined by field scholars. This book will provide a useful guide for intellectuals and advocates alike, grappling with state-sponsored and private Islamophobia across the great geographic and political expanse of Canada."" --Khaled A. Beydoun, Associate Professor of Law, Wayne State University and author of The New Crusades: Islamophobia and the Global War on Muslims ""This volume presents a thorough study of the modes of discrimination of Islam and Muslims in Canada, leaving no stone unturned: from representation, education, and inequalities to law. Highly recommended for scholars and students of political science, anthropology, sociology, and law."" --Jocelyne Cesari, Professor of Religion and Politics, University of Birmingham and Senior Fellow at the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace and World Affairs, Georgetown University ""An urgent and necessary book for academics, policymakers, and the general public. By turns informative, astonishing, and heartbreaking, this book is a clarion call to action."" --Ayesha S. Chaudhry, Canada Research Chair in Religion, Law and Social Justice and Professor of Gender and Islamic Studies, University of British Columbia ""By discussing the various shapes that systemic Islamophobia may take, this book can serve as an agenda-setter for future research on the subject. The selection of the themes is innovative, and the contents are easily relatable. A must-read for those studying the experiences of Muslim minorities in the West."" --Abdolmohammad Kazemipur, author of The Muslim Question in Canada: A Story of Segmented Integration
