The demand for greener and more sustainable technology in the chemical industry has come to light recently as a result of the increased awareness of environmental challenges. To create a safer environment, more precise restrictions have been established along with a rise in the number of environmental laws and regulations. Nearly twenty distinct environmental protection programmes are offered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The majority of Finland's environmental legislation, which covers a variety of environmental protection areas, dates from the 1980s and 1990s. The Environmental Protection Act, which was passed in 2000, updated the law to bring it into compliance with pertinent EC regulations. Legislation currently places a lot of emphasis on chemical safety and waste prevention.

The European Union is now developing a new chemical strategy to better safeguard the environment and public health from the negative effects of chemicals. The new REACH registration, evaluation, and authorization system will be made possible by the policy. After the REACH system is implemented in 2007, a new European Chemicals Agency has been established in Helsinki and will begin operations.

The chemical community has come together to create new chemistries that are less harmful to the environment and human health. The green chemistry movement is one of these strategies. Although green chemistry does not fall under the broad category of chemistry, it is a method of thinking and doing that is better and more effective. The conventional way of thinking still prevents the use of green chemistry principles as the normal practise in the creation of new industries, despite all the environmental restrictions and greater awareness of environmental concerns.

The use of auxiliary chemicals to lessen or eliminate solvent waste in the chemical industry is covered by the fifth principle. Alternative solvents have been created since solvents are frequently required in chemical processes. Extremely low volatility, chemical and physical stability, recyclable, reusability, and ease of handling are all desirable qualities in a solvent. Tonic liquids (TL) are one such potential contender. Tonic liquids do not easily burn or evaporate and have a low vapour pressure compared to volatile organic chemicals. As a result, chemical reactions are safer since releases, explosions, and flames are less likely to occur.
