Selma Ergin is a professor and Head of Naval Arhitecture and Marine Engineering Department at Istanbul Technical University (ITU). She received her BSc and MSc degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Karadeniz Technical University, Turkey, and her PhD degree from Brunel University, UK. She then carried out her postdoctoral research as an invited researcher at Tokyo Metropolian University and Osaka University in Japan, and Southampton University in the UK. She is the director of the ITU Ship Emission Laboratory. She has supervised more than 20 graduate thesis and completed about 30 industrial and research projects. Her research currently focuses on emission control, decarbonization of ships, marine waste heat recovery and alternative power generation systems. She has published two book chapters and over 80 journal and conference papers in the areas of energy efficiency, heat transfer enhancement, thermal radiation, alternative fuels, gaseous emissions, decarbonization, waste heat recovery and ship fires. She has been in the Editorial Boards of several international and national journals. She is Associate Editor of Proc. of the IMechE, Part M: Journal of Engineering for the Maritime Environment. Carlos Guedes Soares is a Distinguished Professor of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the Engineering Faculty (Instituto Superior Técnico), University of Lisbon, Portugal. He received his Master and Ocean Engineer degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, in 1976, his PhD degree from the Norwegian Institute of Technology, University of Trondheim, Norway, in 1984, and his Doctor of Science degree from the Technical University of Lisbon, Lisbon, Portugal, in 1991. He is the Scientific Coordinator of the Centre for Marine Technology and Engineering (CENTEC), a research centre of Instituto Superior Técnico that is recognized and funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. He has supervised more than 70 PhD degree students and co-authored more than 800 journal papers. He has been involved in more than 60 international research projects and 20 national projects as well as the organisation of several International Conferences. He is a Fellow (Conselheiro) of the Portuguese Association of Engineers (Ordem dos Engenheiros) where he has held different responsibilities and duties for more than 30 years. He is also a Fellow of SNAME, RINA, IMarEST and ASME and a Member of the Portuguese Academy of Engineering.
