Rebel Rebel, An Emergency Dialogue by experimental novelists Susana Medina and Roc Sandford is a blazing call to save our planet from the disasters being cooked up for it. A collage or 'pastiche' of different sorts of writing (dialogue, erotic fable, emails, poetry, texting, short stories, essays), it is a historical snapshot of Extinction Rebellion in 2019 and 2020; a literary experiment scattered with references to Dante, Cervantes, Baudelaire, Kafka, Benjamin, Camus, Szymborska, Ballard, Atwood, Callenbach, Gablik, Gosh and others; an intellectual exposition; and an act of planetary defence, registering the life of a rebel family and the friendship of two rebels.

Reviews for Rebel, Rebel: An Emergency Dialogue

PRAISE FOR REBEL REBEL, AN EMERGENCY DIALOGUE 'What drives rebels in Extinction Rebellion? What has the experience been like, felt like, at the heart of XR? Susana Medina and Roc Sandford take you on their shared journey of rebellion hopes, highs and lows; interwoven with vision and dreams of the future we are rebelling for. Enjoy!' Dr Gail Bradbrook, Co-Founder Extinction Rebellion. 'Rebel Rebel is a NOW book, a must read about a movement which has changed and shaped the world very quickly and educated our attitudes towards our current climate emergency. Full of wit, humour, words and actions. A book for our time.' Monique Roffey, winner, Costa Book of the Year, 2020 'If only all writers brought this much passion, commitment and imagination to what is by far the most urgent cause of our lifetimes. We may look back on this book as an emblematic document of these years, wishing it had been shared far and wide across our beleaguered planet.' Chloe Aridjis, author of Book of Clouds 'An informal, chatty, and emotional account of today's environmental and ecological emergency. Full of personal and heartfelt insights about the rise of Extinction Rebellion and why they are so necessary. A wonderful read.' Paul Ewen, author of Francis Plug: How To Be A Public Author 'XR is a global phenomenon. Hundreds of thousands of rebels across the globe are united by the shared need to stop the drive to extinction. Here, two visionary rebels, Susana and Roc, share an intimate and inspirational conversation about why they rebel-and why we will continue to rise up. A must read for rebels now and rebels-to-be.' Ackroyd & Harvey, Culture Declares Emergency 'Rebel Rebel is a very distinctive, immersive and intimate document of a particular historic moment here - and unusual in being in dialogue form - a view from the ground, from the streets, in the eye of the storm. The emotions described in the book, from pain to joy to hope to despair and more, are ones that any sane person will recognise and share, in struggle against the earth's destroyers.' Simon Prosser, publishing director: Hamish Hamilton & Penguin Books
