ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- On the Road, written in 1951, has an energy that captures the exuberance and freedom of the road trip and the adventure and wild times to be had as a young person 'on the road' and it is this aspect of the book which has generated the book's cult following. At the book's core is Dean Moriarty, a free spirited, good-time practitioner and Sal Paradise, his sidekick-enabler and also the book's chronicler of events. As incidents unfold however a broad arc emerges; that of Dean Moriarty's rise as the wild party messiah, in search of 'IT' and 'knowing time', and his eventual descent into madness and the chaos and impact on those around him.

Despite this sad and somewhat darker overtone, the exuberance is infectious and is the reason this story remains a classic. Reading this, I was infused with an excitement for life and for a while the streets of Sydney seemed to throb with energy. Yes! Yes! Yes!

-----

Jack Kerouac's On the Road rocked the establishment with its seminal, stream-of-consciousness portrayal of 1950s underground America. Amidst a whirlwind of sex, drugs and jazz, writer Sal Paradise and his hero 'the holy conman with the shining mind', Dean Moriarty traverse the country in search of life and experience. Wild and exuberant, this life-changing novel defined the Beat generation and inspired countless others.

Jack Kerouac (1922 - 1969) was an American novelist, poet, artist and part of the Beat Generation. Most of his life was spent in the vast landscapes of America or living with his mother, with whom he spent most of his life. Kerouac's best known works are On the Road and The Dharma Bums. Ann Charters, professor of English at the University of Connecticut, has been interested in Beat writers since 1956, when as an undergraduate English major she attended the repeat performance of the Six Gallery poetry reading in Berkeley where Allen Ginsberg gave his sencond public reading of Howl. After his death she wrote the first Kerouac biography and edited his posthumous collection, Scattered Poems. She was the general editor of the two-volume encyclopaedia The Beats: Literary Bohemians In Postwar America and has published a collection of her photographic portraits of well-known writers in the book Beats & Company.

Reviews for On the Road

A memorable and influential rather than a great book. But teenagers love this novel of long roads, big cars, free jazz and loose women without reservation. Kerouac wrote the book in 12 days of 'continuous bop prosody' on an unbroken roll of wrapping paper - for writers, fame might be just a fortnight away. Sadly much of Kerouac's other work seems dated and simple-minded but On the Road is still of tremendous human and historical interest. (Kirkus UK)
