Neighborhood Transformation is a Christian reimagination of compassionate ministry through the application of the practice of biblical hospitality. This book advocates the creation of community outreach programs focused on emotional support, legal support, and spiritual refuge for undocumented African immigrants. Linking the theological and biblical vision for neighborhood transformation with the philosophical framework of community building, it considers the meaning of community within the context of the Christian calling to build a community of strangers in a pluralistic society like the United States of America. The African diaspora is invited to their vocational calling of rebuilding their local communities using Nehemiah, Ezra, and the contemporary Jewish community in the Diaspora as biblical and contemporary example.

Reviews for Neighborhood Transformation: A Specialized Ministry to African Immigrants

"""Neighborhood Transformation is a telling testimony to the power of religion in building and fostering community among immigrants in the US. It offers rich theological insights for appropriating the theme of hospitality for building a community of strangers in a pluralistic world. I highly recommend the book for students and scholars of theology, immigration studies, cultural studies, and African studies."" --Akintunde E. Akinade, professor of theology, Georgetown University ""In a fast-moving prose, Olusegun Osineye lays out a fascinating practical theology of church and society. In deft precise movements, the analysis of church and society relations reconstitutes itself into a provocative public theology of undocumented immigrants in the United States. This is an excellent resource book for ministers and scholars who are after God's heart for immigrants or strangers in the world."" --Nimi Wariboko, author of Transcripts of the Sacred in Nigeria: Beautiful, Monstrous, Ridiculous ""I highly recommend this work. Olusegun Osineye takes you beyond the complexities and controversies of immigration into a world of compassion, laced with duty of care and Jesus-like empathy towards undocumented African migrants in the US."" --Victor Jatula, assistant professor of press and politics, Brunel University London ""This book is a must-read for all pastors and church leaders, documented and undocumented immigrants. The work creates a platform for continued efforts to sooth the pains of many hardworking undocumented immigrants striving for survival in a difficult environment. Undocumented persons face discrimination due to their origin, language, and socio-economic handicaps. However, when the playing field is more favorable, most of them become assets, not liabilities to the country. Kudos to Olusegun Osineye for a job well done."" --Dokun Adewunmi, rector/missioner, All Saints Anglican Church ""My take on this book after reading it is this: It is a must-read by all immigrants, young and old, legal or in the process of becoming legal residents. Take advantage of the economic opportunities that the USA represents which is line with the Word of God Most High to the immigrants in Jeremiah 29:4-7."" --'Bunmi Akindebe, senior pastor, Salem Gospel Mission Int'l"
