"Somatic metazoan cells divide each cell cycle via the process of mitosis with a high degree of fidelity to generate two daughter cells that contain the correct complement of chromosomes. Proper progression through mitosis requires correct mitotic spindle assembly, positioning and orientation. Key events during spindle formation include congression of chromosomes to the equator of the cell through attachment with kinetochore microtubules, focusing of microtubule minus ends to the two centrosomes, nucleation of astral microtubules from the spindle poles and proper anchoring of the astral microtubules at the cell cortex to achieve proper orientation of the spindle, which ultimately governs the plane of division. The ubiquitous molecular motor cytoplasmic dynein 1 (referred to henceforth as ""dynein"") is one of the three maJor eukaryotic motor molecules that use the cytoskeletal meshwork as tracks to transport intracellular cargo within the cell, both during interphase and mitosis."
