Madeline Chu is Professor-Emerita of Chinese Language, Literature, and Culture at Kalamazoo College, Michigan. She has carried out a broad range of cultural and linguistic research, and was the third recipient of the prestigious A. Ronald Walton Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Field of Chinese Language Pedagogy. Chu has written numerous articles on Chinese language education and policy implementation, and edited the CLTA (Chinese Language Teachers Association) Monograph, Mapping the Course of the Chinese Language Field, as well as other literary and culture studies volumes. Additionally, she wrote a widely adopted exercise book, Patterns and Exercises, that helped bring the textbook Practical Chinese Reader to its best-seller status--which was maintained for 15 years.
