Ambushes, snake-bitten, nearly drowning in a river, stuck in quicksand, left to die on an uninhabited island were all in a day's work for me, a young man who grew up dreaming of adventure. My roots and 1950s upbringing are in rural Davie, in tropical South Florida. My father's stories of the South Pacific islands during WWII, and books with the exploits of explorers and animal collectors, fed my imagination and fueled my desire to travel. Following my dreams, I enter the animal business, and set out to explore the beautiful, disappearing worlds of the Caribbean, Mexico, Central and South America, and capture deadly pit vipers, giant poisonous frogs, land iguanas and boas. Without a college degree, I get my advanced education the hard way: in the wilderness. I learn about life, happiness, grit, survival, success, and new directions along the way. Experience the thrill of discovery and danger on countless amazing, adrenaline-fueled adventures, as I travel-often alone-to deserts, uninhabited islands, and steamy jungles. Action packed, with travels to exotic lands, interesting characters, danger, beauty, history, and incredible animals. Koulèv - Book One includes 140 photos, clippings, tables, maps, and references. 440 pages, with annotated table of contents, glossary, scientific name tables, and detailed index. Book Two has 472 pages, 229 phots and maps, and continues with more adventures in new lands with new people. Lovers of travel to Florida, the Caribbean, Mexico, Central and South America will appreciate the stories of the land, people, history, and wildlife in a recently past era. For fans of true-life adventure, the trials, tribulations, and dangers of seat-of-my-pants, solo travel, dealing with the unexpected with only grit and determination, being saved by angels too often to be just chance, will keep you hooked. Lovers of wildlife, especially reptiles, and the wild places where they live, will find hundreds of species mentioned in the text. Herpetologists, especially, will enjoy a nostalgic, factual look back at ""how it was"" in the wild world of herping in the 1960s and early '70s."

Reviews for Koulèv: Adventures of an American Snake Hunter, Book Two

"Dennis Cathcart and I are the same age and grew up in a Florida that still felt wild. Those who feel the need to put your cell phone down should do so... Walk the Palmettos, canal banks and Long-Leaf Pines still standing, if for no other reason than to find that part of your soul connected to the plants and animals still surrounding us. I hope by staining your fingers with the ink of Dennis Cathcart's books, these pages of adventure will inspire your own journey to connect those elusive dots. ... Craig Trumbower, Tallahassee, Florida. Author of More Than Snake Hunting, Even More Than Snake Hunting, and many articles on snakes. ECO Publishing https: //www.ecouniverse.com/ This is my most eagerly anticipated new book of the year! An avid field herper all my life, I grew up reading the exciting adventures of Carl Kauffeld (especially his 1957 masterpiece 'Snakes and Snake Hunting'). Would there ever be another book to match that one in sheer wonder and fun? Dennis Cathcart achieved that in 2022 with ""Koulèv"", a treasure trove of stories of his explorations of Florida, The Caribbean islands, and Latin America. If Book Two follows its precedent, which I know will, be sure both these incredibly richly detailed tomes find a place of reverence in your library. Bill Love / Blue Chameleon Ventures Koulèv: Adventures of an American Snake Hunter, Book Two puts us there with author Dennis Cathcart as he collects specimens of rare reptiles and exotic plants in some of Earth's most beautiful places. The adversities he overcomes are extraordinary. Dennis shares his fascinating life with us in this rich literary work. His style is immediate. His descriptions vivid. His adventures thrilling. It hooked and bagged me on the first page. William Thacker, author of Otters On A Plane-The India/Africa Expedition. bookS2read.com/u/mdjRGd Visit me at wthacker.com Through Koulev, Adventures of an American Snake Hunter, Dennis Cathcart proves himself a brave, observant naturalist, joining the ranks of modern old-school adventure writers such as Bill Love, Tom Crutchfield, Will Thacker and Craig Trumbower. Not only is Mr. Cathcart a natural storyteller, he is an excellent writer. Before you know it, you're right there beside him, looking for critters in Florida, the West Indies, Mexico, and Central America.
