Innovative Bridge Structures Based on Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC): Theory, Experiments and Applications introduces more than a dozen innovative bridge structures and engineering applications developed by the author's team based on UHPC.  As the new bridge structure developed by UHPC can make outstanding contributions to the realization of the ""carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals"" and ""sustainable development,"" and since recent studies have shown that the application of UHPC is expected to greatly reduce the amount of materials and carbon emissions and prolong the life of the structure, this book is an ideal update on the topic.

For example, after calculation, when UHPC is applied to the arch bridge with compression as the main stress characteristic, compared with the steel arch bridge, the dead weight of the UHPC arch bridge is basically the same, and the cost and carbon emission are only 34% and 20% of the latter. Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) as a new generation of civil structural materials has the characteristics of high strength, high toughness and high durability. Through the collaborative innovation of new materials and new structures, the application of UHPC in bridge engineering is expected to achieve the goal of economical, environmentally-friendly, durable and high performance of the main structure.

In 1992, Professor Shai received his Ph.D. in structural engineering from Hunan University. He has been researching of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) bridges over 10 years, and is committed to solving problems of conventional bridges with novel UHPC structures. Prof. Xudong Shao's team developed the core technology of strengthening orthotropic steel deck (OSD) with UHPC, which successfully solved the worldwide problems of fatigue cracking of steel bridge deck and damage to the pavement layer. This achievement has been applied to more than 100 bridges in 26 provinces in China, including Sutong Yangtze River Highway Bridge (in Shanghai), Haiwen Bridge (in Hainan), Hangrui Dongting Bridge (in Hunan) and other long-span bridges. In addition, multiple types of UHPC bridge decks, prefabricated UHPC bridges and long-span UHPC box girder bridges have been developed and successfully applied, which effectively solved many common problems of concrete bridge, such as heavy self-weight, many diseases and large carbon emission. The research on the above UHPC structures has strongly promoted the large-scale application of UHPC bridges in China, promoted the development of bridge engineering towards high performance, and achieved the goal of low-carbon sustainable development. Prof. Shao serves as a member of the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), the executive director of the Bridge and Structural Engineering Branch of the China Highway & Transportation Society, the vice chairman of the Bridge and Tunnel Branch of the Hunan Highway & Transportation Society, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China project evaluation expert. He presided over 100 projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He also published more than 200 academic papers, of which more than 30 were included in SCI and more than 100 in EI. Among the patents he has applied for, more than 60 patents have been authorized. He is responsible for compiling 3 national industry standards, and editing 7 related groups and local standards. He presided over the editing of ""Bridge Engineering"", ""Questions & Answers for Bridge Design "", ""Bridge Design & Computation"" "" New Structures of Jointless Bridge with Semi-integral Abutment "", ""The Steel-UHPC Lightweight Composite Bridge Structures"", ""Steel-STC Lightweight Composite Bridge Deck-Design Principles and Engineering Examples"". Prof. Shao has been engaged in scientific research in the field of UHPC bridges for a long time, and has accumulated rich theoretical and engineering practice experience in UHPC bridge structures. As the main author of this book, Prof. Shao can clearly explain the research and development background, technical characteristics and force mechanism of various innovative UHPC structures and technologies developed by his team, and combine engineering application examples to make it easier for readers to understand.
