This book aims to explore various theories of motivation from a range of perspectives and to apply academic theory to real life classroom situations. Although this book will be underpinned by academic theory and empirical research, including research from the authors' doctoral studies, the book will be presented as a practical 'how to' guide. This book will take a different but needed approach and focus on how motivation can be enhanced by teachers and teaching assistants working both individually and importantly collaboratively. Collaborative practice will be illustrated by many examples of how teachers and TAs have successfully enhanced the motivation of the students they work with. TAs are often asked to work with pupils who are difficult to motivate and who find learning challenging. TAs would find such a practical book on motivating pupils and how this can be enhanced by effective collaborative practice with teachers useful. Likewise teachers will find this book invaluable in managing the support staff they work with in order to maximise learning opportunities for all pupils.
