He led organizations including the Association of Academic Health Centers, the University of Texas Health Science Center, and the University of Massachusetts Medical School; taught medicine at many universities including Harvard, Duke, and the Universities of Texas, Massachusetts, and Washington; and authored and edited several books and major policy studies.
