After taking holy orders, Lathbury was assigned curate of Chatteris in Cambridgeshire. He then served as a curate at Bath, Somerset, and Wootton, Northamptonshire. In 1831, he received the curacy of Mangotsfield, Gloucestershire, and in 1838, he was transferred to the Abbey Church in Bath.
