Stephen Turnbull is best known for his numerous books on samurai and Japanese military history, for which he is the recognised expert outside Japan. His work has led to him winning the Canon Prize of the British Association for Japanese Studies and a Japan Festival Literary Award. More recently he has expanded his interests into China, Korea and Southeast Asia, particularly in relation to their military interaction with Japan. He has also published several books on the subject of warfare in medieval and early modern Europe, where he has developed a strong interest in eastern European armies such as the Hussites and Muscovy. Stephen Turnbull's books are always based on extensive scholarly research coupled with in depth study tours of the countries he is describing.
Essential Histories are remarkably effective in presenting military events in the wider contexts of the new military history.
