ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ---- The feelings I get when reading John M Green's thriller novels are 'joy, fun', which are seemingly at odds with the terrible things that happen to people in this story. So how does he conjure this magic?
The elements Green uses to evoke these feelings are a small crew, amazing technology and a race against time - think of the Mission Impossible movies. The core crew I think of as the 'Fabergé Four' due to their access to the highest echelons of power and wealth. Axel Schönberg - the well-connected father figure, Thatcher - the eccentric genius hacker, Frank Chaudry - the smart and faithful ex-MI6 sidekick, and the smart but impulsive Tori Swyft - fearless ex-CIA agent with impressive physical prowess.
The technology that Green pulls out of his hat brings 'oohs and ahs', despite nearly always being put to misuse by the mysterious evil adversary. As to action, Green has managed to up the ante even more from high-octane The Tao Deception - the previous Tori Swyft novel.
Green clearly enjoys surveying the globe for geo-political pressure points and the latest tech developments and then letting his imagination run free. Craig Kirchner
As the ice melts in the Arctic, climate change spurs a new Cold War, and the world's superpowers race to snatch control of the region's vast resources. Meanwhile Endz of the Earth, fanatical eco-terrorists, conspire to stop them all.
In top-secret talks in Barcelona, Dr Tori Swyft, ex-spy and Greenland's key adviser seals a stunning deal with China. The following morning, she wakes beside two dead bodies - Greenland's prime minister and China's chief negotiator. But she has no memory of what happened. A man Tori knows only as The Voice phones her, taunting her and revealing a horrific video in which Tori is responsible for the murders. But how?
With the police knocking at her door, Tori is forced to go on the run in a city that's currently on lockdown. When Endz of the Earth take drastic action, Tori finds herself in a race against time to find The Voice, prove her innocence and stop Endz of the Earth before it's too late.
