This book draws on an innovative longitudinal study of individual understandings of and attitudes towards volunteering and voluntary organisations, combined with analyses of their reported volunteering behaviours.

The originality of the book rests in its methodological approach, the richness of the source material, and the ability to track changes in attitudes to and engagement in voluntary action over time and relate them to a change in government policy context.
