Chinese Lexicography in the Twentieth Century provides an in-depth description of the evolution of Chinese lexicography over different stages in the twentieth century. It covers such major types as philological, bilingual, learners, electronic, specialized and special-aspect dictionaries, as well as encyclopedic dictionaries (including encyclopedias).

Each chapter concludes with an insightful analysis of the characteristics and prospects of Chinese dictionary making over different periods of time. The book provides, for the first time, a systematic, coherent and phase-by-phase account of Chinese dictionary compilations in Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan in the twentieth century. It ends with a comprehensive survey of theoretical explorations of Chinese lexicography, the application of their findings, and significant activities in the century.
