After the Flood

ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- DI Dan Clement and his team are back in another gripping mystery from Dave Warner. As with his earlier books in the series, we get a strong picture of the way of life in Broome and surrounds. The flood of the title refers to a cataclysmic event wherein a dam near an overseas mining operation collapses, wiping out a nearby village with much loss of life (side note: in an eerie parallel, recent news featured Avon dam in NSW and the threat that planned coal mining operations might pose). As the ramifications of the event become apparent, the story draws in themes of corporate responsibility and social protest. Meanwhile Clement heads up a baffling murder investigation after a death by crucifixion. No need to have read earlier books from the series - each mystery stands well on its own. Thoroughly satisfying reading with lots of rumination on life and its challenges along the way. Craig Kirchner
