Rick Thompson worked for BBC News for 27 years as a reporter, then senior editor at the regional, national and international levels. A lifelong birdwatcher, he wrote a regular column for the Countryside magazine and for four years was a member of the Governing Council of the RSPB. He has been asked to moderate many European conferences on the environment, sustainable energy, biodiversity and climate change. The pictures of wildlife on the cover and chapter headings in this book are his own artwork. His previous books have been 'Park Life' - the wildlife of an urban park, and 'A River Avon Year', describing the wildlife and history of Shakespeare's Avon from it's source to the Severn.
