A Simplified Dictionary of Modern Tongan
This is the first dictionary to be compiled by a Tongan scholar.
In addition to the comprehensive Tongan to English and English to Tongan sections, other features include a guide to pronunciation, a guide to grammar, a selection of proverbs, and useful phrases.
Further listings give a Tongan translation of days of the week, seasons and months; telling the time; points of the compass; continents and oceans; countries and cities; given names; parts of the body; colours; numbers and measurements; technical, legal, governmental, and medically related terms. There are over 20,000 entries.
Edgar Tuʻinukuafe was a lecturer of Tongan language and culture at the Pacific Islanders' Educational Resource Centre in Auckland. A professional teacher and translator, he is the author of An Introduction to the Tongan Language.
