ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- Confession time: I like to crochet. Nothing better than being ensconced on the lounge with a book on my lap, a pot of tea on the side and my trusty 1.25 hook and yarn in hand! I like making squares for blankets, scarves for friends and decorative pieces, so this book is a joy! It takes classic patterns from historical newspapers and women's magazines, and rejigs for the modern crocheter, with updated yarns and sizings. Do you want a pattern for a dress made out of granny squares, or a striped waistcoat fashionable in the '20s; a lovely patterned bookbag or a lacy sunhat for a child; a '60s bikini cover-up or a '40s rainbow cardigan? These and many more are contained here. I haven't made anything out of the book (YET) but the instructions look easy enough to follow and the graphs decipherable. The original illustrations are interspersed with modern photographs of finished product, and there are the occasional snippets of historical interest. Now, for a trip down to my favourite wool shop… Lindy
