Sarah Orne Jewett (1849–1909) was an American novelist and poet whose work was often set in the northeast region. She studied at Berwick Academy where she become an avid reader and writer. Jewett published her first story, “Jenny Garrow’s Lovers” in 1868 followed by the novels A Country Doctor (1884), A Marsh Island (1885) and The Tory Lover (1901). Jewett was best-known for her detailed accounts of New England life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
