Vittorio Alfieri (17491803) was an Italian dramatist and poet. Gianpiero W. Doebler received his PhD in Italian from the University of California, Los Angeles, and works as a translator, specializing in texts using older forms of Italian and in poetry.
""This new translation of Alfieri's Life is particularly welcome as it fills in a gap in Anglophone scholarship and will certainly enhance studies in Italian literature. The last translation appeared more than fifty years ago, making this new one long awaited. Alfieri's Life can be considered one of the first autobiographies in the modern age; contemporary non-fiction novels and self-writing successes would be unthinkable without the foundations provided by Alfieri.""--Chiara Fenoglio, Associate Professor of Italian Literature, Università di Torino ""This new edition provides a comprehensive and clear introduction to Alfieri's Life. The English translation reads very well, rendering not just the content of the text in an accessible, precise, and clear way, but also capturing the beauty of Alfieri's style. I have no doubt that this edition will become the standard version on which Alfieri's Life will be read in the Anglophone world. Both Ficara's excellent introduction and Doebler's translation and accompanying notes allows readers and scholars to appreciate the intellectual beauty of the Enlightenment while uncovering the hidden roots of the forthcoming Romantic era.""--Igor Candido, Head of Italian, Trinity College Dublin
