""Paulo Freire and Ivan Illich were colleagues and their main books had a major influence on educational thought in the 1970s and 80s. This collection of essays traces the origins of their thought and argues for their renewed relevance today. With the rise of interest in critically engaged learning and in the importance of outside-school 'learning networks, ' many of Freire and Illich's ideas have significance for the current context. Perhaps most revealingly, the authors reinterpret and extend these ideas to contemporary issues of gender, indigeneity, digital learning, and globalization."" --Nicholas C. Burbules, Gutgsell Professor of Education, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign ""This outstanding publication comprises a fresh historical perspective to Freire's and Illich's work and impact on the educational field, written with the best scholarly approach. In addition to its research achievements, the book introduces each new section with a beautiful photograph. The result is an attractive volume, which invites the reader to peruse its pages in search of enlightenment and pleasure."" --Diana Gonçalves Vidal, Professor in the Faculty of Education, University of São Paulo
