Through politics and cultural performances, different communities engage and confront the hegemonic state in different ways. Both Perogies and Politics and Mike Starr of Oshawa show the role that politics and culture has played in the Canadian Ukrainian community. While Rhonda Hinther looks at the history of the Ukrainian left in Canada, from its struggles to its successes, Myron Momryk looks at the political career of one Ukrainian man, Mike Starr, and what his career meant for the larger postwar Ukrainian community.
