Lord Edward Fitzgerald was the son of Emily Duchess of Leinster, one of the four sisters whose stories were told in Stella Tillyard's bestseller Aristocrats. Born in 1763, he joined the British army as a teenager, fought in the American War of Independence and was elected to the Irish parliament. But he became a disciple of Thomas Paine, plotted Irish independence from Britain, and, captured and wounded, died in a Dublin jail as a rebel and traitor. His story - which includes a splendidly romantic affair with the beautiful singer Elizabeth Linley, wife of playwright Richard Sheridan - is told with skill, wit, and a wealth of detail. (Kirkus UK)
