Rhode Island author Lynne Heinzmann's historical novel Frozen Voices won the 2016 Fairfield University Book Prize. Her lighthouse books series grew out of a meeting with the Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation and their desire to share the wondrous history of the lighthouse and its people.
""In The Curious Childhood of Wanton Chase , Lynne Heinzmann has created a charming hybrid, with chapters of alternating non-fiction and fiction, telling both the historical details of lighthouses on the New England coast at the beginning of the 20th century supplemented by the imagined inner life of a boy, Wanton Chase, who grew up on Rose Island, off shore from Newport, Rhode Island. This well-crafted book is as enchanting as it is informative and will surely engage young readers, as will the sweet watercolor illustrations and historic photographs."" Peter N. Nelson, Author of I Thought You Were Dead and A More Unbending Battle: The Harlem Hellfighters' Struggle for Freedom in WWI and Equality at Home ""If you've ever wondered what life was like living in a lighthouse on an island nearly a hundred years ago, this entertaining and informative book provides you with an excellent opportunity to find out."" Christian McBurney, author and editor/publisher of The Online Review of Rhode Island History ""Through delightfully told stories and carefully researched historical passages, this book depicts an accurate and compelling picture of life on Rose Island in the 1930s. You will enjoy this book if you are a lover of lighthouses, a history buff, or someone who just appreciates good stories."" Jeremy D' Entremont, author of 18 books, and historian for the American Lighthouse Foundation ""This charming historical narrative is full of delightfully quirky stories, offering young readers a snapshot of Rhode Island history. The included historical information perfectly explains elements of the time period that we see Paul experience in the stories, while the colorful illustrations and historical photos bring the stories and the era to life."" Amanda Chapman, MLS, Library Director ""Lynne Heinzmann and her team have created a wonderful book that documents life on Rose Island during the 1930s, through the eyes of Paul Stedman, grandson of Lighthouse Keeper Jessie Orton. This engaging book intertwines stories of island life during the Great Depression with factual accounts of American life at that time. As the Executive Director of the Rose Island Lighthouse Trust, I'm pleased this book is available to let people know of the rich maritime heritage of Rose Island Lighthouse and the important role this little island once played in American history."" Brian Tefft, Executive Director, Rose Island Lighthouse and Fort Hamilton Trust
