Philip Riggan spends much of his free time outdoors and considers his hikes in Montana at Glacier National Park his favorites, although he has enjoyed hiking along the Appalachian Trail in Virginia as well. Since he hung up his soccer cleats, he has devoted more time to riding bikes, hiking, and paddling. He is lucky enough to have his family join him on many of his outings. He also volunteers in Richmond-area parks and public spaces and appreciates all the wonderful and generous people he has met who share a common goal to increase respect for our natural environment. Phil holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Richmond and a master's degree in urban planning from Virginia Commonwealth University. After 23 years in the media business, he switched careers in 2016 and became a transportation planner for the Richmond Regional Planning District Commission, focusing on bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure and improving connections to mass transit. Nathan Lott holds a journalism degree from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. The son of an Air Force officer, he has lived and traveled widely in the United States, Europe, and the Near East. He credits his parents with fostering the appreciation for history, culture, and the natural world that serves him well as a writer.
