Leo Bruce was the pen name of Rupert Croft-Cooke, who wrote more than twenty highly praised mysteries featuring Carolus Deene. He also wrote eight mysteries featuring Sergeant William Beef, a cockney police detective who invariably knows who done it, and dozens of biographies and memoirs. He died in 1980.
Even the seasoned mystery reader . . . will recognize Leo Bruce as a master of the genre. --Publishers Weekly on the Carolus Deene series A quality read, notable for its tight, efficient plotting and memorable cast. Deene is a sturdy, durable, colorful character; you'll enjoy his exploits here, and will no doubt want to sample previous installments if you haven't yet had the pleasure. --Mystery Scene Typical of [Leo Bruce's] polished style are those mysteries solved by Carolus Deene, a haughty history schoolmaster whose ratiocinative instincts quicken in atmospheric settings. --New York Times Book Review on the Carolus Deene series
